What is Loose Parts Play?

When you empty your child’s pockets at night, do you find a collection of pebbles, sticks, twisty ties and acorns? Welcome to Loose Parts play!

Loose parts are just that, a collection of items with no specific purpose or directions for play. You will see these displayed around the classroom in shallow trays or baskets near placemats that provide an invitation to play. Loose parts encourages imagination, innovation and engagement that is new every time!

Try prompts like these as you play alongside your preschooler:

“What can we make with these?”

“What ideas do you have for this part?”

“Tell me more about why you sorted those that way.”

“I want to hear about this creation you made”
